THE BEGINNINGS
Modece Architects was established in 1985 by Richard Scales and Ralph Carpenter, then based in Bury St Edmunds. Driven by a shared vision for design-focused service and a passion for sustainable construction, they built a practice known for its innovative approach.
Throughout their tenure, Ralph and Richard led the design and completion of a diverse portfolio, including private residences and impactful community projects. Pioneering the use of hemp construction in the UK, they designed healthy, breathable buildings, promoting both sustainable practices and environmentally conscious living.
Since retiring in 2016, Ralph and Richard remain connected to Modece Architects. They frequently visit the office, taking pride in seeing the firm uphold their legacy of sustainable design and continue to deliver exceptional work.
