Field End has been awarded HIGH COMMENDATION FOR ‘BUILDINGS COMPLETED IN 2019’.
Modece’s project for Field End has been awarded a high commendation at the RIBA Suffolk Design Awards 2020 within the category ‘Buildings completed in 2019’. The event took place at the University of Suffolk in Ipswich, with an exhibition which allowed the public to view the projects over the span of a week.
Field End is an Eco-Dwelling constructed with natural materials and sustainable design principles. The clients were looking for a new home with minimal running costs to keep as a lifetime home. In this sense, the dwelling has been designed with highly sustainable materials and a can be adjusted over time to be used solely on the ground floor.
The dwelling is highly sustainable both in its construction and performance. The project has been materialised with natural materials including natural timber structure and cladding, sheep’s wool insulation and wood fibre board.
Its Air Source Heat Pump heating system (which heats by moving existing heat energy from the exterior to the interior of the home thus delivering more heat energy than the energy it consumes) and its MVHR system (which continuously extract moist, stale and polluted air from wet rooms such as bathrooms and kitchens) both have minimal demands as the building envelope is super insulated and airtight. Wall paints of zero VOC (volatile organic compounds) content have been used as well.
The success of the external appearance of the building is down to its careful detailing. The building was designed and laid out to a strict modulation in plan so that no cladding board were to be cut and shadow gaps between boards are carried through around windows and the corners of the building.
