Refurbished cupolas of the Grade II listed Stables at the Food Museum finished

We have successfully completed the restoration of a historical building at the Food Museum in Stowmarket. Working in partnership with Stowe Building, the project focused on the meticulous refurbishment of the 19th-century Stable Block, a remarkable Victorian red brick building. The Stables is one of several buildings we are currently working on at the Food Museum and is part of the first phase of a long-term plan to revitalize the Museum’s site.

Our work for the Stables encompassed a comprehensive overhaul of the building's façade, roof, and distinctive cupolas.

What are the “Cupolas”? The cupolas are decorative timber-framed and brick-nogged turrets on the roof’s ridge. And serve to ventilate the stable rooms below.

In addition, the Stables Building also benefited from careful restoration of its timberwork, masonry, and external window frames.

The Victorian building is a remarkable example of its architectural era, boasting exceptional preservation of original features such as stall fittings, ironmongery, tiling, and polychrome detailing - which are rare to find in a preserved state such as at the Food Museum. These elements offer invaluable insights into the building's history.
